Ben Smink, a manager in Farm Management Support (FMS) for Lely North America, offers insight into the FMS Lean Concept in a recent article for Progressive Dairyman. By implementing lean principles on their 1,000-cow dairy, Hemdale Farms in Seneca Castle, New York, saw an increase in milk per man per hour from 500 pounds to nearly 800 pounds in the past seven years.
Galen Guyer, Lely FMS advisor, helped Haines Dairy of Sigourney, Iowa who struggled with fetching cows after they had transitioned to free cow traffic and a Lely robotic milking system. Guyer went to their dairy and spent several hours with the family. He instructed the family to stay out of the barn for 12 hours. Within 24 hours of the new routine, they only had one cow on the fetch list. Within 24 hours of the new routine, the owners went to their son's ballgame, did chores and went fishing together as a family. This complete article appeared in Cow Management Summer 2015
